Rain, Blackout Collide: No Game for the Bad News

An unfavorable forecast and a series of blackouts spanning from the Upper East Side on down to Union Square have led the Commish to cancel the Bad News' regularly scheduled game this evening. Which means the squad will have to wait until the playoffs next week to bounce back in a big way from its recent defeat.

Though, sadly, a decent version of Marcia Griffiths' "The Electric Boogie" was nowhere to be found on YouTube, luckily there are plenty of videos out there with a rain theme to post.

Next game: Monday, July 2, 7:10 p.m., at the Coleman Oval. The Bad News takes on Innovation in the first round of the single-elimination playoffs.

Well, That Was a Bummer

Fielding a team of only nine players, the Bad News succumbed to the Legal Aid Society 13-6, racking up the team’s second loss on the season.

Raul Chiriboga pitched a solid game for the Bad News, standing strong in the 92-degree heat of Central Park (along with battery mate Nicole Chantharaj) and also helped himself on the offensive side with a hit and an RBI.

Kevin Ma went 3 for 4 at the top of the order, Damian Nash contributed a pair of hits to go with two runs scored and Franc Crisafulli chipped in with a triple. Chrissy Korney also contributed some serious hussle to the Bad News effort -- first by making it from LIC to Central Park in 47 minutes, and later, by going all out with a tumble worthy of Culture Club in trying to turn a ground ball into a hit. And, multi-tasker that she is, besides running her record as manager to 0-2, Alicia Korney went 2 for 4 with a pair of RBIs.

But the Bad News Big Bat of the Game award has to go to the Indian Richie Sexton -- Bobby Mathews. After getting a late-in-the-day call up to the big leagues from AAA Rockland, Mathews played a solid shortstop and went 3 for 3, hitting a true home run to start off the Bad News' best offensive inning.

Still, it wasn’t enough. The Bad News got as close as 7-5 with two innings left to play, but Legal Aid was able to find a few gaps in the three-person outfield, and took full advantage of having an extra man at the end of their batting order -- putting the final nail in the Bad News coffin with a 5-run sixth inning.

Big thanks to Meredith Diversa for coming out and contributing solid fielding in right to go along with solid contact at the plate. Without her, there couldn’t have been a game.

Next game: Today, Wednesday, June 27, 7 p.m., at East River Drive #7. The Bad News takes on its opponent from last week, Team Tuttle, in a rematch.

Bad News Tuttle Victory Photos

Patience a Bad News Virtue

Making their long-delayed Central Park debut, it was patience at the plate that paid off for the Bad News in an 8-6 win over Team Tuttle. The Bad News worked a total of eight walks (several coming on full counts) over the course of the game -- and half of which would eventually go on to score.

Chrissy Korney got the job done at the top of the order, reaching base three times on a hit and two walks, while Alicia Korney and Frank Stingone both contributed a pair of RBIs to the offensive effort. But the Bad News was still down by a run entering what would be the fifth, and final inning. Fortuitously, the team responded by playing smart small-ball, stringing together a series of walks and singles to get the insurance runs any away team wants to have headed into the bottom of the last inning.

That's actually when, in a surprise to even himself, Stingone was involved in the Defensive Jewel of the Evening for the second week in a row. Playing with a single contact lens and somewhat questionable depth-perception, Stingone still managed to gun down a Tuttler at third base to record the much-needed second out of the inning after she foolishly tested his arm in an attempt to reach third from first following a hit to left.

SM refugee Julie Murphy made her long-anticipated homecoming to the Bad News, contributing her trademark cat-like reflexes and proffering a general sense of scrappiness behind the plate. And in an impressive return from the nearly 120-day DL, DH Dave DaCosta contributed to every category on the stat sheet, in the process earning a key walk in the last inning to get on base as the tying run.

Next game: The Bad News plays back-to-back games next week. First up is a newly scheduled game against the Legal Aid Society, on Tuesday, June 26, 6 p.m., at Heckscher Ballfield #2.

Then, on Wednesday, June 27, 7 p.m., at East River Drive #7, the Bad News will take on Team Tuttle in a rematch.

Stupid Rain. Stupid Central Park.

The Bad News was thwarted yet again in its latest attempt to make its Central Park debut -- this time, it was Mother Nature interfering, with an assist from the Heckscher fields ground crew -- and in the process, denying the team's fans a play-off preview against Innovation. Small consolation did arrive approximately 28 minutes after game time, in the form of a serious, serious deluge.

Next game: With the third time being the supposed charm, the Bad News will try to compete on the unfenced fields of Central Park again next week -- same time, same place, just a different opponent. Tuesday, June 19, 6 p.m., at Heckscher Ballfield #2, against Team Tuttle.

Burden of Undefeated Season Lifted

Sadly, the Bad News came up just short in the Ball Field Battle of the Media Titans, losing 4-3 to the New York Daily News. Both teams came into the game with matching 3-0 records, but only one team could leave the Coleman Oval with their undefeated record intact.

While the Daily News lineup resorted to a unique mix of coercion tactics throughout the game -- including an infield that enjoyed making ball and strike calls for the ump, and a number of players who attempted to intimidate via cutoff t-shirt -- the Bad News instead relied on their signature mix of pluck and guile to bring a 3-3 tie into the final inning.

Defensive Play of the Game has to go to an absolutely amazingly executed rundown in the bottom of the 5th. With the game still tied and runners on, Frank Stingone fielded a hit to left field and threw a bullet to Alicia Korney at third base. With a runner caught between her and home, Korney shoveled an underhand toss to pitcher Art Glavas, who was covering the plate. Glavas then ran the runner back to third, hitting shortstop Damian Nash, who applied a tag to record the out.

All in all, a textbook 7-5-1-6 play.

The Bad News did have their offensive chances -- Kevin Ma took advantage of those chances twice, contributing a pair of RBIs to go with his pair of hits -- but the team left the bases loaded in the top of the 6th, and were only able to bring Nash home once, despite his three hits. One of those hits, Nash’s second double of the night, led off the Bad News' final frame.

After the first out of the inning was recorded, Korney (0-for-4 and ashamed of it) hit a line-drive shot at the Daily News' third baseman -- ignoring her own instructions to take the first strike -- and Danny D'Amico (2 singles) was doubled off first to end the game. But that’s an outcome Korney will have to live with.

With last ups, the Daily News was able to easily push across the winning run in the bottom of the 7th. (Though a small measure of revenge was claimed this morning, with my purchase of the New York Post.)

Glavas showed heart on the mound, pitching a great complete game in making his softball pitching debut at any level. Also, big shout out to Kristine P., for catching a full 7 innings as a pinch-hit player. I feel guilty just typing about it the day after, remind me of that, and I'll buy you another big Styrofoam beer next chance I get.
