For the Love of the Game

Even with the playoffs a thing of the past, the Bad News found a way to stay motivated, playing for bragging rights and inherent-self respect, in an 8-2 win over Legal Aid Society.

Before settling into its defensive groove, the Bad News gave up a pair of runs in the top of the first, eventually storming back with four runs in the bottom of the inning and ensuring that the fate of the game was never in doubt -- especially after tacking on a trio of insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth. It was a refreshing feeling, especially following the spanking Legal Aid had delivered a month earlier to the Bad News.

Art Glavas and Debbie Carreras combined to deliver 5 RBIs from the Nos. 7 and 8 slots in the batting order, with Glavas having a perfect 3-for-3 day. At the heart of the order, Julie "Wheels" Murphy and Raul "Rah-ooohl" Chiriboga got the job done both at the plate and on the base paths, together scoring half of the Bad News' runs. Ringer Joe Frega also made his presence felt, going 2-for-3 with a double, and providing innovative defense in the outfield on the way to cleanly fielding his chances.

Update: The Bad News closes out its season with two additional games, Tuesday (July 31) and Wednesday (Aug. 1). Both games will take place at the Coleman Oval, with 6 p.m. start times.

Bad News Squad Goes for Wild, Brief Playoff Ride

The Bad News' road to its opening-round playoff game against Innovation (which had been rescheduled not once, but twice), lasted longer than the team's post-season play.

The Bad News made short work of Innovation in the first game, jumping out to an early lead thanks to Frank Stingone's two-on, 2-out double in the bottom of the first, and the squad never looked back on its way to posting an 8-2 win that was a true team effort.

From top-to-bottom, everyone in the lineup contributed at least one hit, keeping their opponents on the field for long stretches of the game and killing Innovation's playoff dreams with a three-run sixth inning. The game also marked the return of David DaCosta to the mound in all his green-sock splendor, and allowed catcher Julie Murphy to show off an impressive set of wheels on her way to scoring a pair of runs.

The second game, against Team Tuttle, who the Bad News had defeated in a matchup earlier in the season, did not have as happy an ending, with SourceMedia's team being bounced from the playoffs in a 6-5 loss.

In a game that was close from start to finish, it quickly became apparent that Team Tuttle was playing co-ed softball with a heightened intensity and zest for making the game a contact sport. Nonetheless, the Bad News took a 5-4 lead into the sixth inning, before giving up two runs in a finish eerily reminiscent of last season's playoff loss to the hated Hipster Pigeons.

Nicole Chantharaj returned to her 2006 form in the second game, boosting her OBP with a pair of walks, while Pat O'Leary (1 RBI) and Eric June (3 RBIs) both went 2-for-3. June -- whose presence at a field, up until this point, has served as a harbinger that a game will not be played -- also gets two nods as the Diamond Defensive Player of the Game, mowing down runners at third in both games with a pair of perfect throws from right field.

Next game: And now, on to the games that no longer count -- Friday, July 27 at the Coleman Oval. 6 p.m. start time. Opponent TBD.

Into Each Life, Some Rain Must Fall...

Longfellow aside, thanks to all the Bad Newsers who came out to stand strong in the pouring rain until the ump finally called the game -- and that includes you Nicole, even though you were lucky enough to spend the worst of the deluge at an undisclosed location, located conveniently to the M15 route, having a beer.

Also, thanks to those who felt the duty to post my second-favorite Supertramp song on YouTube.

Next game: The playoff game against Innovation (who were insane enough to actually offer to play in the torrential downpour), has been rescheduled for Monday, July 16, 6 p.m. at the Coleman Oval. They are hardcore softball players who must not be taken lightly. If we win, we'll play again at 7:10 p.m.

Action Shots: Softball & Kickball

So Much for My Softball Playoff

Are you kidding me?

The Bad News traveled all the way to Midtown for a playoff match up against Innovation, only discovered that there was no game at "The Beach" once again. The umpire walked away after the previous game concluded, and he never came back.

"Dude, where's my umpire?"

Despite the anti-climax, the Bad News did play a pick-up game with Innovation and took the opportunity to scout their team. Here's the verdict -- they have a good team, but they are not unbeatable. Play deep and we shall be A-OK.

Some of our Bad News teammates also enjoyed a pick-up kickball game before our softball game yesterday.

Update: Our first round playoff game has been rescheduled to Wednesday, July 11 at 6:00 p.m. @ Coleman Oval Field. If we advance to the next round, we'll play again at 7:10 p.m.
