Bad News Squad Goes for Wild, Brief Playoff Ride

The Bad News' road to its opening-round playoff game against Innovation (which had been rescheduled not once, but twice), lasted longer than the team's post-season play.

The Bad News made short work of Innovation in the first game, jumping out to an early lead thanks to Frank Stingone's two-on, 2-out double in the bottom of the first, and the squad never looked back on its way to posting an 8-2 win that was a true team effort.

From top-to-bottom, everyone in the lineup contributed at least one hit, keeping their opponents on the field for long stretches of the game and killing Innovation's playoff dreams with a three-run sixth inning. The game also marked the return of David DaCosta to the mound in all his green-sock splendor, and allowed catcher Julie Murphy to show off an impressive set of wheels on her way to scoring a pair of runs.

The second game, against Team Tuttle, who the Bad News had defeated in a matchup earlier in the season, did not have as happy an ending, with SourceMedia's team being bounced from the playoffs in a 6-5 loss.

In a game that was close from start to finish, it quickly became apparent that Team Tuttle was playing co-ed softball with a heightened intensity and zest for making the game a contact sport. Nonetheless, the Bad News took a 5-4 lead into the sixth inning, before giving up two runs in a finish eerily reminiscent of last season's playoff loss to the hated Hipster Pigeons.

Nicole Chantharaj returned to her 2006 form in the second game, boosting her OBP with a pair of walks, while Pat O'Leary (1 RBI) and Eric June (3 RBIs) both went 2-for-3. June -- whose presence at a field, up until this point, has served as a harbinger that a game will not be played -- also gets two nods as the Diamond Defensive Player of the Game, mowing down runners at third in both games with a pair of perfect throws from right field.

Next game: And now, on to the games that no longer count -- Friday, July 27 at the Coleman Oval. 6 p.m. start time. Opponent TBD.
